Registering your dog
Your dog must be microchipped before it can be registered under the Lifetime Registration System.
Registration provides the link between the information in the microchip register and council officers who will be responsible for finding and looking after your animal if it becomes lost.
Your dog is required to be microchipped from the age of 12 weeks and registered before it reaches 6 months of age. Microchipping can be done through your local vet.
Trained assistance animals such as seeing eye dogs and farm working dogs do not have to be registered.
Greyhounds which are registered under the Greyhound Control board do not have to be registered under the Companion Animal Act 1998.
Your dog will only need to be registered once (life time registration) instead of being registered annually. Upon paying the initial registration fee, there are no other ongoing fees.
There is a transitional period up to 1st July 2002 for dogs that are currently registered with council. You may continue to register your dog with council annually up until July 2002, but after this date you must have your dog microchipped and registered under the Lifetime Registration System.
It is also important that the registration tag is securely fixed to your dog's collar so that sufficient information is available to assist council officers in locating the owner of the dog.
For more information about registering your dog contact Council's Environment & Planning Department on 4823 4409.
