Registering your cat
Your cat must be microchipped before it can be registered under the Lifetime Registration System.
Cats born before July 1999 do not have to be microchipped or registered. Cats born after this date or cats transferred to a new owner must have lifetime registration.
However, you may elect to have your cat microshipped and registered, which has the advantage of maximising the chances of having your cat returned if it gets lost.
Part 29 of the Companion Animals Act requires all cats to have some form of identification that enables a local authority to be able to obtain details on the name and address or telephone number of the owner of the cat and if the cat is registered, information contained in the current registration tag for the cat. Identification may be of one of the following forms:
- A collar worn around the cats's neck with a tag attached
- A microchip
- Any other form of identification prescribed by the regulations.
